Yorkshire Wolds Railway to launch track extension

On Sunday 18th October, the Yorkshire Wolds Railway (YWR) will formally launch the extension of its track.

Construction of the extension at the heritage railway near Fimber started in April. The lengthened journey will now see trains running on what was the actual track bed of the original Malton and Driffield Junction Railway.

Ivan Merino, Infrastructure Director said:

“It’s very exciting to be able to launch this section of track. Our members have worked in all weathers to get extension finished and have done a great job. To finally be able to run on the original track bed is particularly exciting!”

Phil Robson, Finance Director said:

“It’s going to be a great day with a lot happening. We have the formal launch of the extension at 10.45 with a small ceremony and special train departing at 11. In addition we will be joined by Andy Dunning who will be bringing 20 static engines to show including three of the Lister type D, that will be celebrating its 100th birthday on the 12 October. Not only that but the Spurn landship will also be on static display. We really have tried to make the extension launch a special one and we look forward to welcoming many visitors to site”.

The YWR is always keen to involve new people, and anyone interested in becoming a member or volunteering, making a donation or just finding out more can visit the Yorkshire Wolds Railway website or call 01377 338053 for more information.

The YWR will be running trains and opening the visitor centre every Sunday and Bank Holiday until the end of October and every Wednesday during school holidays from 10 – 4. All trains run subject to availability.

Outside of school holiday, the visitor centre only will be open every Wednesday until the end of October from 10 – 4. Additionally, there are members on site most Saturdays who will be happy to show what is being done, subject of course to safety requirements.
