This year marks a special milestone as East Riding of Yorkshire Council celebrates 25 years of recognising the outstanding contributions of individuals, businesses, and projects that have made a significant impact on local communities.
The awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, 13 May at Champney Treasure House, Beverley. The Chairman of the Council, Councillor Linda Bayram presented the awards which celebrated those who have made a positive difference to their community and the East Riding.
Amongst this year’s winners is Lazy Bean Café, Skirlaugh, who source produce locally, with suppliers showcased on the café walls. Lazy Bean champions sustainability and serves as a community hub, supporting local charities and events.
Councillor Bayram said: “Reaching the 25th anniversary of the Chairman’s Awards is a proud and inspiring moment for East Riding of Yorkshire Council. For a quarter of a century, we’ve had the privilege of honouring the remarkable individuals, businesses, and projects that breathe life into our communities. This year’s winners exemplify the values of sustainability, community spirit, and local pride that make the East Riding such a special place to live and work. The winners of the 2025 East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairman’s Awards
Chairman’s Built Heritage Award:
Single New Dwellings, Conversions and Minor Works Category – 20 High Street, Bridlington.
This property was developed with the council’s conservation team and transformed a 200-year-old property into elegant holiday accommodation.
Commercial Development and Major Schemes Category – Hotham Hall
Hotham Hall has been restored over three years, standing as a model for skilled renovation whilst becoming an exclusive wedding and events venue.
Chairman’s Business Award:
Up to 50 Employees Category – Lazy Bean, Skirlaugh
A family-run café which supports staff wellbeing through fair shift patterns and skills development.
51 and Over Employees Category – Soanes Poultry Ltd., Middleton on the Wolds
A Fourth-generation family business employing over 140 local people. The company recognises long service and is committed to sustainability.
Special Business Award – Siemens Mobility, Goole
With a 170-year heritage, Siemens Mobility has built a major new manufacturing facility in Goole, creating up to 1,000 jobs and generating 1,700 opportunities.
Chairman’s Community Award:
Group Category – Humber Wellbeing Hub, Hessle
Th hub operates seven days a week with around 40 volunteers. It offers programmes like Listening Cafés, walking groups, post-natal support, and grief cafés.
Individual Category – Katy Smith, Hedon
After losing her son to suicide in 2021, Katy Smith founded Ruben’s Voice to support her community in Hedon through wellness sessions and community events.
Chairman’s Sport Award:
Talented Performer Category – Owen Garsides, Cottingham
Having qualified for the GB Para Olympic trials, Owen has claimed numerous titles at British Para and Yorkshire Championships.
Team/Club Category – Beverley Braves The Braves have produced professional players and scholarship athletes, inspiring countless young athletes and redefining community sport.
