Eden Camp, the modern history museum near Malton, will bring back ‘Tank Week’ this May half term. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds, and sheer power of armoured warfare.
From the 23rd-31st May, the former prisoner of war camp will be transformed into a hands-on showcase of some of the most iconic armoured vehicles in military history. Visitors will see them in motion while learning about their engineering, development and role in 20th-century warfare.
At the centre of this year’s event is the renowned Sherman M50, a striking Cold War-era development of the classic WWII Sherman tank. Visitors can see it up close, discover the story behind its design, and learn how it became one of the most recognisable tanks of its era.
Across the week, there will be live demonstrations, interactive experiences and family-friendly activities, including:
- Live Tank Demonstrations: See restored vehicles in action as engines fire up and the power of armoured engineering comes to life.
- RC Tanks – Have a go at driving a remote control tank on the miniature assault course.
- Learn to Load: Get inside the Abbot and learn how to load the gun.
- Interactive Displays & Exhibitions: Get hands-on with a range of exhibits featuring models, uniforms, vehicle parts and wartime artefacts.
- Family-Friendly Activities: Follow the Tank Trail, track down hidden clues, and identify different shell sizes to crack the code and unlock a sweet treat from the museum shop.
Nick Hill, Museum Manager at Eden Camp, said:
“Tank Week really gives a unique chance for visitors to get hands-on with remarkable pieces of military history, including the impressive Sherman M50. It’s an opportunity to step into the world of these powerful machines, gaining insight into what it took to operate and maintain them. Whether you’re a dedicated tank enthusiast or visiting with family for the first time, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for both the vehicles and the people who brought them to life.”
