Report recommends 4.99% East Riding Council Tax increase

Residents in the East Riding could soon be paying almost 5% more in council tax. A report from the council’s Director of Finance recommends the authority increases council tax by the maximum amount allowed without triggering a local referendum, which is 4.99%.

The report is set to go before East Riding Council’s cabinet on January 27, where councillors will be recommended to submit the proposed increase which would then be voted on by the full council early next month. The full council is set to meet on February 5 to set the 2026/27 budget.

The report explains that in the 2026/27 financial year, the council must raise £255 million from council tax. This, it is said, requires a Band D rate of £1,964.47, an increase of 4.99% from the 2025/26 amount of £1,871.10. Of the 4.99%, 2.99% relates to general council tax whilst the other 2% to the adult social care precept.

A 4.99% council tax increase was also placed on East Riding residents last year. The 2025/26 budget sought to turn the council into a “smaller, leaner organisation” according to the council’s portfolio holder for finance, Cllr Nigel Wilkinson.

Following the council’s budget meeting on February 5, the final council tax resolution will be submitted for approval at a further full council meeting on February 25. This will detail the full council tax amounts for all bands, including precepts from town and parish councils, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, and the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.
