Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Jonathan Evison’s proposal to appoint
Councillor Leo Hammond as his new Deputy has been unanimously backed by the
Police and Crime Panel.
The Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner presented his plans to panel
members at a Confirmation Hearing on 31st July 2024.
PCC Jonathan Evison said to the panel that the support from Mr Hammond would allow
more work to be done within our communities.
In a written response issued today, the Police and Crime Panel members said “The
proposed candidate, Mr Leo Hammond, is recommended to be appointed to the position
of Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside”.
Mr Hammond is a Councillor covering the Wolds Weighton ward in the East Riding of
Yorkshire and will stand down as the Cabinet Member for Planning, Communities and
Public Protection at the end of August. He worked alongside Jonathan Evison in both
elections, being his agent in the May 2024 election.
Living in a village in the East Riding and having formerly lived in Hull, Mr Hammond
understands the issues of both rural and urban communities. Being a Councillor and a
Cabinet Member, he understands the importance of the Nolan Principles and the need
to act appropriately and responsibly in public office. He has great understanding of
communications and working with the media. He has a strong track record of engaging
well with the public and partners.
Leo understands the importance of working with the public, private and voluntary sector,
along with the need to balance budgets and demonstrate best value for money for the
taxpayer.
PCC Jonathan Evison said: “I am delighted that the Police and Crime Panel
unanimously approved the decision to appoint Leo Hammond as Deputy Police and
Crime Commissioner.
“Leo’s experience within our communities will prove vital when taking on this role. After
working with Leo for a number of years, his enthusiasm and commitment to the Humber
region is evident.”

Mr Hammond’s support will provide additional expertise and capacity to reach and
engage with our residents and partners and give a voice to our communities on the
issues that are important to them.

Monday 12th August 2024.”
Mr Hammond’s position is a political appointment, on a full-time basis until the
conclusion of the PCC’s current term of office in May 2028.
