During the Christmas holidays, there will be a range of free, fun, creative activities for children and young people receiving benefits related free school meals.
The sessions will take place across the East Riding and include musical themed dance workshops, crafts, baking, sports camps as well as outdoor adventure sessions and farm experiences.
Children can learn K-POP dance routines, groom a horse, try sumo wrestling or archery, design and make their own festive gifts and enjoy Christmas parties.
The activities are all part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which is funded by the Department for Education, and is primarily aimed at those aged between five and sixteen, and who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals. There are also a limited number of places available to children and young people who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP), regardless of free school meals status.
New to HAF this Christmas are family cooking sessions and festive treat making, experiences with horses and a brand-new multi-sports session in Goole with over 25 different sports on offer.
Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “There’s a fantastic range of activities available right across the East Riding – from Anlaby and Bridlington to Goole and Withernsea. It’s important that children and their families can access these fantastic, free activities in their local communities.
“We’re really pleased to be supporting the HAF scheme again, to help keep children and young people entertained, active and having fun.”
The majority of sessions are four hours long and each child and young person can book up to four sessions for free in the Christmas holidays, subject to availability. Places are booked on a first come, first served basis. Several providers are also offering paid places for all children during the Christmas holidays.
