East Riding of Yorkshire council is highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and purchasing this Christmas.
They are urging residents to only purchase animals from licensed breeders to make sure that animal welfare standards are upheld. You can also adopt animals from accredited rescue shelters, to support a local charity.
By law, all business premises must hold a licence to sell animals as pets and to breed dogs for sale. This includes from residential properties.
If purchasing a pet, is recommended to look for licensing information on the council’s website, or ask for proof of licence, when visiting premises. If there are concerns over a breeder, it is recommended to walk away and not to feel pressured into buying.
Given the high demand for pets, responsible breeders may now have waiting lists for dogs and cats. However, it is vital to only buy a healthy animal that has been bred in good welfare conditions.
A public register of those business licensed to breed and sell dogs can be found on the council’s website at https://www.eastriding.gov.uk/business/licences-and-registrations/available-licences/animals/dog-breeding/
