The Beckside Park project is a transformative initiative that has been in development for several years.
Situated on Goodmanham Road, the park is an open green space and walking route for residents and up until recently offered two football pitches for the local team. The pitches at Beckside Park are now unused due to the recent installation of a full-sized all-weather pitch at The Market Weighton Secondary School and now the focus has changed to reimagine the park as a vibrant, inclusive community destination for all ages of the community.
Following the demolition of the on-site changing room facility, the site has undergone a comprehensive community consultation. Residents were invited to share their ideas and aspirations for the space, ensuring the final plans reflect local needs.
Key features of the newly renovated park will include, a retained football pitch, multi-use games area (MUGA), skate park, outdoor gym equipment for adults, seating and picnic benches, and CCTV installation for enhanced security.
All facilities will be free to use, promoting accessibility, wellbeing, and community cohesion.
Market Weighton Town Council has been awarded £268,000 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to transform Beckside Park, as part of commuted sums. The town council will contribute £62,000 to the £330,000 total project cost.
Councillor Gary McMaster, the council’s cabinet member for planning, housing and infrastructure said: “I am very pleased that the award of commuted sums will be able to help with the installation of the new equipment and benefit the residents of Market Weighton greatly. The addition of a skate park and ‘MUGA’ will also be a great added extra for the community. This award will make a real difference in Market Weighton and will improve this area.”
Kevin Keller, town clerk of Market Weighton Town Council said: “We are extremely grateful to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for this generous grant. The funding will allow us to significantly enhance our local facilities and create a more welcoming and enjoyable environment for both residents and visitors. The new park will be a valuable asset for the whole community.”
