Poultry farm near Market Weighton to house 50,000 more birds

Plans to increase the capacity of an East Yorkshire poultry farm have been approved by East Riding Council. Under the recently approved plans, Goodmanham Grange will house 50% more birds.

The application, submitted by R Stephenson & Sons, for the site North East of Market Weighton, was approved by the council in late February. The site currently has two poultry sheds, each housing 50,000 birds. The application sought permission for a third shed, taking the total capacity of the site to 150,000 birds.

Plans submitted to the council explain the site is regulated under an Environment Agency Environmental Permit, and that the closest residential property to the site is around 800 metres from the poultry sheds. The site is 1.8km from Goodmanham village.

The new shed will house broiler chickens throughout their 38-day growing cycle. The shed will then be empty for the 10 days for cleaning and preparation for the next flock. This takes the full poultry cycle time to 48 days.

The site is accessed from Cross Gate. With the number of birds on the site increasing by 50%, plans explain that the number of traffic movements on site would increase by around 40% from 43 to 61, per flock cycle.

The council’s report into the application, which recommended approval, said the main concern with the plans would be mud and silt being moved onto the public roads from vehicles moving to and from the site. As a result, a condition has been put into the planning approval which states that “no development shall take place on site until wheel cleaning facilities have been provided.”

The design of the third shed will match the existing two on site. “The building will have a steel portal frame and be clad in polyester-coated profiled sheeting in Olive Green,” plans explain.
