Easter weather: UK set to be warmer than Corfu as temperatures rise after chilly spell

April 15, 2019

The Easter weekend will not only bring with it chocolate eggs and simnel cake, but also a timely reprieve from the recent chilly weather.

Warm and sunny conditions are being forecast throughout much of the country in the coming days, with temperatures rising above 20C (68F) in some areas on Saturday and Sunday.

That would make the UK hotter than Corfu, St Tropez in southern France, Bodrum in southern Turkey, and the Spanish island of Majorca.

It will be sunny and dry for most across the four days, especially in the south of England, with only the North West and parts of the east coast potentially experiencing cooler spells when clouds roll in.

London and other parts of the South East could get particularly warm, with highs of 23C (73F) possible.

Cardiff and parts of Northern Ireland may hit 21C (70F) on Saturday, and Glasgow and Aberdeen could get up to 20C (68F), despite the UK average for this time of year being 11.5C (52.7F).

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said we should notice temperatures climbing gradually during the week, with a bright Good Friday in store before it heats up on Saturday.

He said: "After a chilly spell this weekend, we are going to see temperatures gradually increase through the week.

"By the weekend we could see in parts of the country temperatures of around 20C, or just above."

It will still fall plenty short of the all-time April record, which stands at a scorching 29.4C (85F), recorded on 16 April 1949 in Camden Square, London.

The forecast will be good news for the millions of Britons planning to hit the road for an Easter getaway.

More than 25 million leisure car trips are expected to take place this week, with 15 million in the run-up to Good Friday and further 12 million across the bank holiday break.

Good Friday is expected to feature the most extreme jams, with RAC research suggesting 4.4 million journeys are set to clog up major routes between 11am and 4.30pm.

According to the RAC, the best day to travel if you want to avoid major traffic will be Saturday.
