March 08, 2020

Police are investigating after thieves tried to blow up a cash machine in a village south of Manchester.

Bomb squad officers were called out after Greater Manchester Police were alerted to reports of an attempted cash machine robbery at about 3.15am on Sunday.

The suspects were unable to make off with any cash and the explosion failed during the incident in Stockport Road, Timperley.

"Upon police arrival, parts of the explosive device were found at the scene," officers said in a statement.

"As a precaution, specialist officers are in attendance and will carry out a controlled explosion."

They said people in a small number of houses had to be evacuated to ensure their safety.

The force later tweeted: "Specialist officers have now made the area safe in Timperley, #Trafford.

"The cordon has been lifted.

"Thank you to local residents for their cooperation as we responded to this incident."

No arrests have been made and inquiries are ongoing.
