Essex lorry deaths: Ten teenagers named among 39 victims

November 08, 2019

Ten teenagers were among the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated trailer in Essex last month, police have confirmed.

Essex Police released the names of the 31 men and eight women whose bodies were found in an industrial park in Grays on 23 October, after confirming on Thursday they were all Vietnamese nationals.

The youngest two were just 15 years old and the oldest was 44.

DNA from families who believed their relatives were victims was used to identify many of them.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Smith said: "This was an incredibly important process and our team has been working hard to bring answers to worried families who fear their loved one may be among those whose tragic journey ended on our shores.

"Our priority has been to identify the victims, to preserve the dignity of those who have died and to support the victims' friends and families.

"It remained of paramount importance to us to ensure that an individual's next of kin were informed, and that they were given some time to absorb this tragic news before we publicly confirmed their loved one's identity.

"We have worked closely with the National Crime Agency, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Vietnamese Authorities to identify and locate their families."

The trailer the 39 victims were discovered in had come from Zeebrugge in Belgium but their routes from Vietnam have not yet been revealed.

Four men in the UK and Ireland have been arrested or are wanted over their deaths.

The driver of the lorry, Maurice Robinson, 25, of Craigavon, Northern Ireland, has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people, and money laundering. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 14 November.

Extradition proceedings to bring Eamon Harrison, 22, from Mayobridge, Northern Ireland, to the UK from Ireland are ongoing.

A European Arrest Warrant has been issued and Harrison has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, human trafficking and immigration offences.

Brothers Ronan and Christopher Hughes, from County Armagh in Northern Ireland, are wanted on suspicion of manslaughter and human trafficking.

In Vietnam several others have been arrested.
