Disney characters to feature on new UK road safety warnings

May 15, 2019

We already have zebra and pelican crossings - now Mickey Mouse crossings could be coming to a school near you.

Britain's official road sign designer Margaret Calvert has produced a series of new designs featuring Disney's most famous characters including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck.

It is part of a campaign to encourage parents and children to be safer on the roads and marks a collaboration between Disney Junior and road safety organisation Brake.

But although the signs look realistic, they will not actually appear on any real roads.

Instead they will feature in classrooms and safety guides will be given to nurseries, schools and parents.

Ms Calvert, who is behind the official signage on all of Britain's roads, said she hoped the signs would "help teach young children important lessons of the road".

She added: "It was an enjoyable challenge collaborating with Disney Junior and Brake on an important subject, and by using such recognisable characters I hope they help to capture the attention of children, and parents too."

New research has shown four in five parents are worried about the speed of cars around their children.

The survey also found that two in five parents thought it was too dangerous to walk their children to school and 35% were worried that their children did not know the basic skills involved in crossing a road safely.

But even parents still had things to learn, with only half of those surveyed able to identify a pelican crossing and 48% unaware of the speed limit around schools near them.

The research findings were from a survey of 1,000 parents by Fly Research during April.

Dave Nichols, community engagement manager at Brake, said: "Our vision is a world where all children can enjoy safe and healthy journeys, which is why we're always working to improve the safety and welfare of children on UK roads."
