Harry Styles face tattoo was PR stunt, singer Kelsy Karter reveals

February 01, 2019

The singer who caused a stir after appearing to get a tattoo of Harry Styles on her cheek has revealed it was all a fake to promote her new single.

Kelsy Karter, a big fan of the former One Direction star, shared pictures of the provocative artwork on Instagram on Tuesday, shocking her followers.

One photograph on Karter's profile showed the artwork on her reddened cheek, along with the caption: "mama, look what i made me do."

The 24-year-old, a recording artist based in LA, has previously said she was desperate to work with Styles.

The tattoo recreates a promotional shot taken for Styles' eponymous 2017 album, where the singer posed with wet hair while wearing a blue velvet suit. The post got nearly 60,000 likes.

On Friday, Karter posted a video on her YouTube channel revealing the ruse, with her song about Styles playing in the background.

She said in the video that she wrote the song in the spring of last year and shelved it.

With Styles' birthday fast approaching in February, Karter said it was time to act and her team concocted the idea of putting a fake Styles tattoo on her face.

They hired a celebrity tattoo artist to make it look real.

"By the way, we know it looked ridiculous," the singer said in the video. "That was the point."

Karter said they posted the photo on social media and the next morning it was in every major news outlet. And more importantly, the singer says, her song about Harry was also mentioned.

"I had your attention," the singer said.

Shortly after, she said Billboard announced the release of her new single and she got invitations from talk shows as everyone wanted to see her tattoo in person.

At the end of the video reveal, the singer said she was grateful to Styles for introducing rock to a new generation of fans.

"This has always been about rock and roll," the singer said. "'Harry' is an anthem for the fans, the tattoo is gone and all that's left is music."
