End of the road for Driffield Steam & Vintage Rally

November 22, 2019
This morning the news came that the end of the road for the Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally had come. The following statement has been released by the East Riding Engine Club.

It is with deep regret that the East Riding Engine Club announces the end of Driffield Steam & Vintage Rally. The club, which has organised the annual August event since 1990, formally made the decision at its November AGM.

The rally celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019 and each year attracted several hundred working historic exhibits of all shapes and sizes from steam rollers to models, fairground rides and even aeroplane engines.

Although it has been a key element in Driffield’s calendar, significant rises in the costs of organising the event and meeting increased safety and security needs had led to the rally making a loss for the last couple of years.

The rally has relied upon the remarkable voluntary efforts of club members with the support of their families and friends to organise the event. This often represents a year-round commitment. A lack of new volunteers and an ageing membership have meant the club is no longer able to stage the rally, as this workload is falling on an ever-smaller number of people.

As a non-profit organisation, the East Riding Engine Club has in past years been able to make many donations to local charities from the proceeds of the rally. In addition, Yorkshire Cancer Research has also benefitted significantly from the street collections, held during the very popular Saturday night road-run of exhibits into Driffield town centre, with a record figure of £3,300 being achieved in 2018.

Club Chairman, Harold Bell, said; ‘This hasn’t been an easy decision for the club by any means; the rally’s brought a lot of pleasure to the public and really been an event Driffield can be proud of. Sadly, year on year the rally gets harder to organise and none of us are getting any younger, so with it being the 30th anniversary this year the members felt it was time to go out on a high’.

The East Riding Engine Club will continue to meet for social events and to celebrate our mechanical heritage. New members will always be welcome.
