Under My Umbrella - The new Umbrella Plaza in Driffield

Residents are waking up this morning to Driffield’s newest attraction, the Umbrella Plaza, in Market Place.

Dozens of brightly coloured umbrellas have been hung above the Market Place as part of the Town Council’s efforts to develop a food plaza in the centre of Driffield, working with the Town Centre Steering Group, made up local independent business people.

Driffield Town Council have financed the project with additional assistance being received from ERYC Local Growth Fund, and it is understood that Driffield is the first market town in the Yorkshire region to install such an attraction.

New picnic benches, paid for the ERYC Re-Opening the High Street Fund, have been installed and hopes are high that the area will be a popular site for people to meet and socialise and enjoy a coffee or a takeaway meal from the many lovely pubs, restaurants, cafes and deli’s there are in the town.

A map of the Driffield and the Wolds, highlighting attractions and walks in the area, has also been installed – providing a real flavour of all that Driffield and the surrounding area has to offer, as well as the Wold Ranger Map and benches that mark the start and finish points of the recently launched Wold Rangers Way.

The installation was the brainchild of Town Centre Steering Group member, local self catering proprietor, Maggie Lynch, who commented “Popular in countries such as Spain and Portugal, I know what a fantastic spectacle this kind of umbrella display can make, I just thought it would be a really unique way to encourage visitors to the town and help Driffield stand out as, to our knowledge, we would be the first small market town in the region to have this eye catching attraction.”

The Mayor, Cllr Matt Rogers, whose town centre pub, The Original Keys, is situated next to Umbrella Plaza, said “We are all very excited about this project, not only the Town Councillors but speaking as a local business person, I am confident that Umbrella Plaza will be fantastic draw and delighted that this great idea is coming to fruition.”

“It’s going to provide a fantastic facility for locals and visitors alike as well as bringing colour to the town centre.”

Town Clerk, Claire Binnington said “Umbrella Plaza and the installation of the picnic tables is the culmination of a lot of work done by the Town Council to provide Driffield with a town centre space where residents are encouraged to dwell, we hope too in the near future to make more of this space and to feature small scale entertainment and attractions”.
