MP Backing “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” Bid

East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is supporting calls for the Yorkshire Wolds and parts of East Yorkshire to be designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ (AONB).

The proposal has renewed impetus in light of the government’s move to look afresh at designating a small number of new National Parks and AONBs.  Sir Greg has now written to Natural England giving the proposition his full backing.

Sir Greg said: “It is clear to anyone living in, or visiting our region, that the Yorkshire Wolds and the surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful and this should be designated in law. The Yorkshire Wolds boast numerous characteristics which are of particular significance, including clear chalk streams, special geological features, and unspoiled landscapes which have inspired artists such as David Hockney.

“An AONB designation would help to protect our natural local environment in the future, while bringing benefits in terms of increased tourism. It is essential that present and future generations should all be able to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty of our East Yorkshire countryside for years to come. AONB status would ensure this.

“This is a proposal whose time has come. It has widespread and growing support, including from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, as well as from local councillors.”

“Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status gives the local authority a duty to manage the area to preserve its beauty and it gives greater powers to restrict unwelcome developments.”
