Scarborough Beachcomber open top buses are back!

Following the government’s relaxing of lockdown rules, Scarborough’s popular Beachcomber open top buses will return from Saturday 18 July.

The Beachcomber buses, which are run by locally-based bus company East Yorkshire, will be running along the seafront every day from 18 July until the end of summer.

The company has put rigorous measures in place to make sure customers and drivers can use the open top buses safely, with special cleaning measures, temporary screens fitted around drivers, and contactless payments available.

Ben Gilligan, East Yorkshire’s Area Director, said that the restart of the open top buses was a morale boost to the company’s drivers: “Throughout lockdown, our drivers have been working hard, in difficult conditions, to make sure key workers could get around,” he said.  “We’ve gradually seen things getting back to normal, and seeing people safely enjoying a ride on our Beachcomber buses will feel like a real milestone.”

“Since it was announced that tourism attractions could reopen, we’ve done everything we can to make sure our open top buses are safe, from extra cleaning and social distancing notices on board, to special ‘fogging’ machines that disinfect every nook and cranny of the bus.  We were very pleased to be awarded Visit Britain’s “Good to Go” mark, to recognise the measures we’ve put in place.  Now we hope we can help families enjoy the summer, and bring a bit of normality back to Scarborough.”

The Beachcomber open top buses will run every 15 minutes between The Sands and The Spa, with a loop up to St Thomas Street in the town.  Day tickets are just £5, or £3 for children and those with concessionary bus passes, with a group ticket only £12 for four people travelling together.  Customers can pay for their tickets with cash, contactless or in advance on the East Yorkshire Buses app.

The news about the Beachcomber buses coming back follows the return of the company’s popular Coaster buses to their normal timetables.  The high-spec buses, which feature free wi-fi, USB chargers, next stop announcements and luxury seats, run regularly between Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and the coast’s holiday villages, and help locals and tourists alike visit the seaside resorts.

The Beachcomber and Coaster timetables can be found now on the East Yorkshire website at www.eastyorkshirebuses.co.uk or by downloading the East Yorkshire Buses app.
