MP Sir Greg Knight welcomes more police officers

East Yorkshire MP, Sir Greg Knight has welcomed the announcement that police ranks in the Humberside police force area have been bolstered with an additional 72 officers since the Government launched a major recruitment drive in September last year.

Across England and Wales more than 3,000 extra officers have joined the police since the recruitment campaign was launched, confirming that the Government is on track to recruit 20,000 extra officers over the next three years. There are now a total of 2001 officers in the Humberside area.

Sir Greg commented:

“The recruitment drive is at the centre of the Government’s commitment to provide more police resources to help keep communities safe.”

“Other steps are planned, including funding to provide more officers with Taser equipment to keep themselves and the public safe.”

Expanded stop and search powers and plans to consult on increasing the maximum sentence for assaulting police officers are also under review.

Sir Greg adds

“At this time of national emergency, these additional officers have never been so important to help to keep communities safe”.

Home Secretary Priti Patel MP commented

‘Each one of these new officers will make a difference in helping to cut crime and keep people safe.  For many, their first role has been to join the fight to stop the spread of Coronavirus, to protect the NHS and save lives.’
