Green light for the reopening Yorkshire Wolds Railway

The final preparations are being made at Fimber Halt for the Yorkshire Wolds Railway’s 2022 operating season that starts at 10am on Sunday 17 April and continues every Sunday and bank holiday Monday until 30 October.

Throughout the winter period, members have been hard at work painting, sanding, building, tracklaying and everything in-between at the fully volunteer run heritage railway in readiness for welcoming visitors back to the local attraction near Fimber.

Chairman John Lidster said “our members have kindly dedicated many hours of work both on and off site to ensure we will be ready and operational. The biggest change for visitors this year is that we are now able to offer cab rides right to the end of field 2 and over the point that was commissioned earlier in the year. For the 2022 season we have also slightly changed our operating hours and are now open from 10 – 4.”

In addition to taking a cab ride, walking through the visitor centre, or catching up on the ongoing restoration work on the brake van or second locomotive Patricia, as its Easter weekend, visitors can also expect something a little different. “We will be having an Easter egg hunt with eggs as prizes on both Sunday and Monday, along with offering a limited number of afternoon teas in the wonderful surroundings of our site at Fimber Halt” explained Katy Bowser.

John continued “Access to the visitor centre and car park at Fimber Halt is free and a cab ride is priced at £3.50 per person. We are really fortunate to have such an attraction on our doorstep and I would like to thank all those who continue to support us”

The YWR is currently on the look out for a health and safety director with operational safety under ORR and HRA guidelines and a lead person for the maintenance and repair of locomotives and rolling stock – ideally with previous heritage or mainline railway experience. To find out more information, please contact the YWR on 01377 338053. Additionally, there are usually volunteers on site on most Wednesdays and Saturdays who are happy to show what is being done, subject of course to safety requirements.
