Commuted Sums help transform North End Park in Driffield

Friends of the Beck (Driffield) have been presented with a plaque to commemorate their project at North End Park, Driffield using the £7,658 funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments.

In addition to the funding from Commuted Sums, Friends of the Beck (Driffield) received £20,000 from the Ministry of Housing Communities & Local Government, along with £2,500 from the Horace Taylor Trust towards the £30,158 project.

Friends of the Beck (Driffield) have turned an overgrown and underused corner of North End Park into a disability friendly sensory area. This includes seating, a large planter to be used for the sensory planting, a new pathway and gabion baskets along the beck. The group will also be installing two storyboards, one detailing the history of the beck and the local river network and the other including information on the local wildlife and sensory planting.

Driffeld Beck forms one of the most northerly chalk streams in Europe and is a breeding ground for the brown trout. The Beck attracts a variety of wildlife including kingfishers, grey herons, egrets and bullheads, as well as water shrimps.

Darren Baker, Chair at Friends of the Beck (Driffield), said, “It's been a really good opportunity, made possible by East Riding of Yorkshire Council! The group's motto is “Making a difference in Driffield!”  and I think the group has achieved this.

“I never wanted the Friends of the Beck (Driffield) to be just a litter picking group, and thanks to East Riding of Yorkshire Council's help, we've achieved this.”

Councillor Claire Holmes, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, added:  “I congratulate the Friends of the Beck (Driffield) on their amazing work and their transformation of this area. I am delighted that we as a council have been able to facilitate this through the award of Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval.”
