Council responds to criticism of Driffield’s new car park

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has responded to criticism and controversy surrounding the opening of the new free car park in Exchange Street.

Concerns had been raised regarding the size and number bays and safety in the area around the car park entrance.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:

“The new free Exchange Street car park has been delivered by the developer as part of the wider redevelopment of the former Eastgate car park site, which has enabled construction to begin on a new Aldi store in Driffield.

“We opened this car park before the former free Eastgate car park was closed, to avoid any loss of parking in the town, therefore some finishing touches still need to be made.

“The bays have been laid out in line with British standards, to make appropriate use of the space, and the sizes of the spaces all meet national guidelines.

“Although the new car park provides fewer spaces than the former Eastgate car park, when the new Aldi store opens later this year, that will create more parking spaces than before – an increase of more than 80 extra spaces.

“We are looking at the safety concerns about parking at the entrance to the car park. We have already put cones down and will be introducing prevention measures.

“We are also currently working on a parking solution for market traders on Thursdays.

“We continue to work with the developer, local councillors and other parties to address any outstanding issues.”
