Carlos Corberan: Southampton considering approach for West Brom head coach to replace Russell Martin

Sky Sports News has been told there has so far been no contact with the current Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl – who was assistant to Ralph Hassenhuttl at St Mary’s two years ago – and was seen as the early frontrunner to get the job.

It’s thought ex-Roma boss Daniele de Rossi was also a name of interest, but Southampton aren’t currently planning to pursue the Italian coach.

Saints are still in the early stages of seeking a replacement for Russell Martin, who was sacked on Sunday after an emergency meeting of the board, in the wake of the 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham.

That performance hastened a decision that the Southampton board were reluctant to take and, as such, the club had not been actively working on finding a successor.

However, they would like to have a new head coach in place for Sunday’s game against Fulham, live on Sky Sports, if possible, though getting the right candidate is seen as paramount.

Any deal for Corberan could be problematic, however, as it’s thought West Brom have a substantial release clause built into his contract worth in excess of £2m, and the Spaniard would need convincing that it is a sensible career move to swap a team currently two points off the Championship play-offs, for one that is nine points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League.
